RAISING A SUCCESSFUL KID IN SWIMMING

By: C.Moemen Arafa
Today we will discuss a few pieces of Advice for young children to be successful in swimming or any other sports. First of all, in my belief as a coach, the parents have More Control on their Kids more than us and with few tips that we will discuss in this article will help you to understand More About Sport, especially Swimming.
you need to know that building a successful Swimmer or an Athlete in Any Sport Takes time. so Accept that progress in any sport takes at least 7 -10 years after puberty in most sports for any athlete to achieve their full potential.

Also, you need to know that
• success at a younger age does not guarantee success later in an athletes’ career.
• And in fact, there may be an indication that the reverse is true because the swimmers are not brought along slowly and because coaches didn’t teach them good technique, but, instead, they simply worked them harder than other coaches at a younger age.
• The goal is not maximal performance but maximal development at each stage of the biological age of the athlete.
• Short-term success usually results in long-term disappointments.
• Approximately 80% of age group (10 – 14 years old) champions are not successful as senior or national swimmers. More success was achieved by those who take a longer-term approach.
• It is far more important to bring swimmers along gradually so they don’t burn out mentally and so they can improve relative to their peers as they get older. This is what I call, Long Term Athlete Development, or LTAD.

WHAT IS LTAD?
Long Term Athlete Development is about achieving optimal training, competition, and recovery throughout an athlete’s career, particularly in relation to the important growth and development years of young children, adolescents, age group swimmers.

Scientific research has identified that it takes at least 10 years, or 10,000 hours for talented
athletes to achieve sporting excellence. There are no short cuts!
This LTAD program was produced and applied in many countries around the world. They have
been adopted and grown in programs and countries like the USA, Canada, UK, Australia,
Scotland, Hungary and Italy and many other countries and associations, like the ASA Technical
Swimming Committee “ASA”.

In the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf, we try to educate and develop coaches, parents and
even sports federations to put these ideas and programs into our systems so coaches and
administrators will take a long-term approach to help develop better athletes.
There are many types of LTAD frameworks. Some programs are split into six categories,
sometimes into seven, but the common arrangement is five categories
This graphic shows the ASA framework for the STAGES OF OPTIMAL TRAINABILITY (Balyi and
Hamilton, 1999).

ABCs: Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed
PHV: Peak Height Velocity
PSV: Peak Strength Development Velocity

As a parent, you need to communicate with the coach and work with him on how to get your
kids better, he can guide you with more tips that can build a better person and athlete in
future.

You need to treat your child as a small kid let him/ her enjoy and have fun, also don’t keep all
the talking with your kid is only in sports and swimming.

Know that swimming is something they do it is not something to identify them, don’t introduce
him/her as this is my kid the swimmer.

Don’t do everything to them teach them responsibility and self-management. Always encourage
them instead of punishing them.

Stay calm, relaxed, and proudly in competitions.

Reward them with something they really love and give them part of your time.

Believe it or not, kids can learn how to prepare and unload their training bags, cleaning their
clothes for training and competition and fill their water bottle.

There is no shortcut in sports of swimming so the performance and the kids’ attitude in practice
are the most important thing.

Avoid relying on “sports foods” or “sports supplements” and focus on the balanced diet that
includes a variety of healthy and useful foods.

Let your kids try different activities and sports don’t specialize in young age the nothing called a
10 years’ old Breaststroker champion or Butterflier champion in this age, also you need to avoid the
other activity like other sport that will interrupt the recovery in an age that proper to specialize
one sport.

Encourage them to be committed to the school and studying like their commitment to the
sports.

Teach them that competition is something they need to enjoy is not something that judges
them as a good or bad person.

Attend training regularly to show your interest in your child’s effort and training process rather
then just the win/loss score.

Tell your child you’re proud of him for his involvement in a healthy activity.

Even if you are an athlete or player, even if you’re a coach, you must resist the temptation to
train your child. So this “rarely achieves the result”.

Don’t look for shortcuts like “magical sports drinks” or “Super magical supplement” success in
sports comes from practicing the skills, and develop the concept of loving the sports and fitness
are the real “magic”.

Don’t compare your kid performance with the other kids each kid have a different ability and a
time to shine.
Swimming Techniques improvement is the most important thing in all ages.
Competitive swimming, in my opinion, it’s all about maintaining a great technique at high speed.

There is no shortcut to success.
